The Teenager's Den

The Teenager's Den

A perfect solution!

Jeannie explains how one lucky teenager found his own private space, without being a blot on the landscape…

"Howie’s parents moved from the Cotswolds to Snowdonia National Park to run a self-catering business.

"The only problem was that the house was too small for all of the family. It was a difficult decision as most of the family were growing up. Since they would be flying the nest in a few years, a house extension would have suited them at the time but, a few years later, it would have been too big for the parents alone.

"Howie is away most the year at college but, when he goes home, there is not a lot of space for him. The hut was an ideal opportunity to have somewhere for Howie when he came home. Also, when he eventually finds his own house, they’ll still have that extra room for occasional use.

"We contacted Snowdonia National Park on behalf of the family to find out if they would allow us to put a hut in the customer’s garden, and they approved of this.

"The family were very keen for the hut to blend into the countryside, so the hut and roof were made in juniper green to blend in.

"Howie planned the hut with great detail, coming over to see us and drawing up a floor plan. He had a small table top cooker, small fridge, flat screen TV, sink and woodburner. We built a small bed in the alcove and fitted a small wardrobe with space for a chest of drawers he had.

"They sent a picture of the hut from a distance away from the house. We knew it had been the right colour as we could hardly see it!

"He loves the hut and often cooks for his parents and invites them up for supper when he is home from college.”
